What is the difference between an FD and an RD?
A Fixed Deposit (FD) is a one-time lumpsum investment where you deposit a lump sum capital for a fixed tenure at a guaranteed interest rate. A Recurring Deposit (RD) is a systematic savings plan where you deposit a fixed monthly installment over a specific tenure, earning compound interest on each installment. If you are looking for higher potential returns, you might want to compare these with a Systematic Investment Plan (SIP) in Mutual Funds.
How does compounding frequency affect my FD yield?
Standard FD compounding is done quarterly in India. The more frequently interest compounds (monthly vs quarterly vs annually), the higher the effective yield. Our calculator lets you switch frequencies to see this effect on maturity value.
When is TDS deducted on FD/RD interest?
Banks deduct Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) at 10% on interest income exceeding ₹40,000 in a financial year (₹50,000 for senior citizens) if you have submitted your PAN card. If you don't submit your PAN, TDS is deducted at 20%.
